Maintenance

General

Evaporators must be cleaned to avoid pollen or grass accumulations which would reduce the heating capacity of the heater. Using a garden hose, spray the evaporator from top to bottom in an angle that prevents pushing the debris inside the evaporator.

To clean the plastic surfaces use mild soapy water and a soft cloth (never use solvent or abrasives).

Winterizing

If the pool heater is installed in a region subject to freezing conditions the pool heater must be protected in the same manner as the filtration system.

  1. Set the temperature knob to 0 and set the circuit breaker to off,
  2. Disconnect the water connections,
  3. Drain the water by slightly tilting the unit backwards (75°),
  4. Rinse the inside of the heat exchanger using tap water,
  5. Drain the water once again by slightly tilting the unit,
  6. Block the openings to avoid vermin infestation,
  7. Clean the condensing drains around the base of the heater,
  8. Cover the unit with plastic or waterproof canvas,

If the installation is made with by-pass valves, it is recommended to store them in a warm location to avoid freezing damages.

It is also possible to fill the heat exchanger with pool anti-freeze only, but ensure that the anti-freeze contains an elevated pH to prevent corrosion. This is optional and requires appropriate hardware.

Water control

Total Alkalinity (Buffering capacity of water) :

  • The alkalinity level in the water of your pool must always be over 100 PPM (parts per million) to protect the heat exchanger against corrosion.
  • It is suggested to test alkalinity once a week.
  • WARNING : It is very important not to circulate the pool water inside the heat exchanger of your heat pump if alkalinity level is under 100 PPM.
  • Total alkalinity is the key for balanced water. Your local pool dealer will show you how to treat your water.

Find now the others data's about water treatment in relation to corrosion protection.

PH (Relative acidity)

  • 7.2 to 7.6
  • A low PH also conducts to corrosion. (Acid)
  • It is suggested to test PH once a week.
  • Always check total alkalinity first.

Free Chlorine (Remaining Chlorine not combined with ammonia or nitriogen)

  • 1 to 3 PPM
  • It is suggested to test chlorine 3 times a week.

Calcium hardness (Dissolved calcium in water)

  • 100 to 350 PPM
  • A too high level will involve blurred water and accumulation of tartar.
  • A too low level will involve corrosion.
  • It is suggested to test the calcium hardness once a year (beginning of season).

TDS (Total dissolved solids)

  • 1500 PPM
  • Caracteristics of a too high level are : stains, colored water and corrosion.

Salinity

  • .35%
  • Only Titanium Heat Exchanger heat pumps should be installed on pools using a Salt Chlorine Generator.

Note: NEVER ADD CHEMICAL DIRECTLY IN THE SKIMMER, AS THE CHEMICAL WOULD DIRECTLY REACH THE HEATER EXCHANGER.
